Payroll Officer – Braintree

Job Description:

Optima Plus Recruitment are seeking to recruit a Payroll Officer on a temporary basis for a period of 6–9 months. This role involves carrying out day-to-day processes to provide an effective and accurate payroll service to the stakeholders of the Payroll Shared Service.

Accountabilities

  • Work as part of a team to manage the end-to-end payroll process for all organisations, ensuring payroll records and controls are maintained.
  • Manage and execute the day-to-day payroll processes for a portfolio of organisations in accordance with their HR policies, service standards, and performance requirements. This includes processing starters, leavers, and administering statutory and occupational leave schemes such as sickness, maternity, and paternity.
  • Maintain group email inboxes efficiently.
  • Respond to external and internal inquiries (from management, staff, and members) related to payroll services.
  • Ensure salary deductions, such as lease car payments, union memberships, health schemes, and court orders, are accurately processed according to employee instructions.
  • Ensure all deductions from salaries comply with the organisation’s financial regulations, HMRC tax and NI requirements, and Essex Pension Fund regulations.

Requirements:

  • Experience in payroll processing.
  • Recognised payroll qualification and evidence of ongoing professional development (desirable).
  • Experience managing multiple payrolls with competing deadlines (desirable).
  • Understanding of Gross to Net calculations.
  • Familiarity with iTrent payroll software is desirable but not essential.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of HMRC requirements, including tax, National Insurance, statutory payments (SMP, SSP), and RTI reporting.
  • Strong IT skills and a proactive approach to using and developing payroll systems.
  • Excellent numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Ability to work independently within a small team.
  • Strong communication skills, able to engage effectively with employees, managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Flexible approach to duties and working hours.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, with excellent timekeeping and organisational skills.
