Principal Planner/Team Leader (Northampton)

  • Location: Hybrid, Northampton
  • Rate of Pay: £50.00 to £53.00 per hour (Inside IR35)
  • Contract Type: Temp

Job Description: Our client is seeking a Principal Planner/Team Leader with expertise in handling major and complex planning applications. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing 4-5 members of the Development Control team and will play a critical role in delivering an efficient Development Management process. You will report to the Planning Development Manager and act as a key decision-maker and leader within the team.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the timely processing of planning applications, pre-application advice, discharge of conditions, and permitted development queries to meet performance targets.
  • Handle significant planning applications, including site inspections, consultations, and assessment, making recommendations in line with client policies.
  • Prepare and present Committee reports on planning applications.
  • Deputize for the Development Manager in their absence, including workload allocation and performance monitoring.
  • Negotiate improvements to development proposals and financial contributions with developers.
  • Provide expert planning advice to the public, prospective applicants, and stakeholders regarding large or complex proposals.
  • Collaborate with other departments, council sections, and external bodies to ensure comprehensive consideration of development factors.
  • Represent the client as an expert planning witness at hearings and public inquiries.
  • Address complaints and assist the Local Government Ombudsman where necessary.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience managing major/complex planning applications and projects.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience in performance management.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience preparing reports and representing at public inquiries.
  • Familiarity with planning policies and procedures, and ability to negotiate effectively.
